WHAT IS GONG MEDITATION?
Gong meditation is a unique type of sound practice that involves using therapeutic sounds and vibrations of gongs to promote the ability of self-healing. This practice is also sometimes referred to a “sound bath” as gongs are not emitting one sound or key as known in modern music but rather a wall of sounds and frequencies resonating with all objects in its range, especially participants. Attendees often describes their experience as being “immersed” in sound waves.
Sound therapy has long history of being use to manage a broad range of health conditions. The treatments are based on the understanding that all forms of matter – including our body’s cells – vibrate at different frequencies. Factors such as stress, depression and disease cause cells and organs within our bodies to vibrate at changed frequencies.
Gong sound therapy has been practiced for thousands of years in sacral centres, shamanic experiences or healing rituals. Today we know that gong baths can help reduce stress and liberate emotional blockages. Some tones are promoting vitality and healing, and also to increase happiness by reducing stress. Sound therapies has been shown to relieve a number of problems, including pain, loneliness and depression.
The gong works have a clearing effect on emotional issues, breaking up limiting and negative thought patterns, and as a result, is an excellent therapy option for stress related issues, such as light depression, anxiety, helps to return to once-balance and connect back to ourselves.
It is effortless state of relaxation, deeply rejuvenating for our bodies and cells, and it may promote unblock emotions. Everything you see around you is vibrating at a frequency, whether we realise it or not. Sound frequencies can affect us on a cellular level, influence how we feel and function. Sound healing practices uses vibrational sound and frequency to enhance happiness, alter consciousness and create a deep sense of peace and well being for better health.
Number of healthcare clinics and addiction centers are offering sound therapies such as gong meditation, singing (Tibetan) bowls to help manage various ailments is growing globally. Music therapy is now frequently offered in clinical settings such as hospitals, clinics, and hospices.
How is gong meditation practiced?
Individuals who perform gong baths usually do it while lying down on their backs. To make yourself comfortable, bring a meditation mat, a pillow and a blanket when attending a gong meditation. All that’s required is for you to lie down in a comfortable position. The gong is initially played very softly. As the meditation session progresses, the volume is increased gradually. And since the purpose of the meditation gong sound is purely therapeutic, the volume is never amped to unbearable levels.
The gong playing technique is changed frequently to avoid sustaining a fixed, monotonous rhythm. This results to entrainment, a process in which brainwave frequencies change. Your brain first achieves the Alpha brainwave state that exists in frequencies lying between 8 and 12 Hertz. Alpha brain waves are associated with feelings of relaxation. In this state, individuals experience daydreams, associative thinking and elevated imagination. This is quickly followed by an influx of Theta brainwaves. Theta waves fall within the frequencies lying between 4 – 7 Hz. Activities related to theta brainwave state occur either when you’re deep in meditation or during REM sleep.
